Academic Skill Building
With the help of committed volunteers, we individually tutor a growing number of participants who have "fallen through the cracks" of the educational system and who might not be accepted by other programs. The Center offers a personal, goal-directed, loving and supportive environment in which our students can reach their educational goals. Each student meets with the executive director and education coordinator to determine the individual's literacy goals for the year. These goals encompass reading, math, spelling or writing levels the student strives to attain. The Center staff and volunteer tutors work closely with each student in helping them realize their potential.
The Dominican Center academic skill building program also offers basic computer training and resume writing assistance. Whenever possible, the skills obtained in the literacy program are integrated into the computer lessons.
Education opportunities for the enrichment of the body, mind and spirit in poetry, art, music, home care, cooking, parenting skills and healthy living are also offered.
Financial Literacy
The financial literacy program operates under the umbrella of the Dominican Center's housing program.
- New participants register for the program with the executive director.
- New participants meet with the financial literacy counselor.
- The financial literacy counselor reviews the the participant's personal finances.
- Credit reports are checked and a monthly budget is developed.
The financial literacy program includes teaching an understanding of the expenses of homeownership such as taxes, insurance, maintenance and utilities.
